Interview – Hamish Guthrie of Hecker Phelan & Guthrie

I have been keen to feature prolific Melbourne interior design firm Hecker Phelan & Guthrieon the site for a loooong time. In actual fact, I first contacted HP&G requesting an interview on January 6th this year! This week, director Hamish Guthrie finally got his interview back to me – but of course was most charming and very apologetic about the delay! :) It’s been a super busy time – late last year founding partner Kerry Phelan announced her departure from the company after 10 years of partnership, and this year both Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie have taken time off to travel, absorbing creative inspiration and gearing up for the challenges ahead. No hard feelings Hamish – it was worth waiting for.

Local Talent: John Shepherdson

Sydney-based lighting designer John Shepherdson has been dealing and restoring vintage industrial for the last ten years. Prior to this, his game was Art Deco furniture and lighting. Shepherdson carefully sources old theatre lights, lamps, photographic and film lights and lovingly restores them into statement vintage industrial pieces.

John Shepherdson will host an exhibition at the Shapiro Gallery, Woollahra from 15-22 June. The “Light Years Ahead” exhibition is a collection of original one off lamps inspired by the 1957 Russian Sputnik and the Russian Luna 1 Module. All the lamps are hand made by John Shepherdson, using polished stainless steel spheres and vintage camera lenses and filters.

HFOC hosts a great selection of Shepherdson’s vintage industrial lighting works:
